Time-trial round-up
Back on Saturday 9th April a trio of Lewes Wanderers competed in a Veteran Time Trials Association 10-mile time-trial on the popular A22 course between East Hoathly and the Boship roundabout. Sally Turner (trainSharp) proved the fastest of the half-dozen female competitors and 9th fastest overall as she passed the timekeepers after 23 minutes and 41 seconds of effort.
Third quickest female and 16th overall was Kate Thomas in a solid 25:14, while Peter Baker decided it was too chilly for fast times so rode round in what is for him a pedestrian time of 30:54, which is still nearly 20mph, to place 24th of 26 finishers.
It was considerably warmer come the morning of Good Friday 15th April, although perhaps not so conducive to riding 41.6 miles of rolling Mid-Sussex roads as Crawley Wheelers hosted their annual spring “sporting” TT. As such the lone Wanderer to compete did so on his road bike against a dozen others. Richard Burchett covered the convoluted course involving negotiating multiple roundabouts in 1 hour 55 minutes and 37 seconds to place 8th in category.
There were no such complications for Duncan Fuller that same day as he merely had to blast up the A3 near Liphook for 5 miles and navigate his way around a flyover junction to flay back to the start on the opposite carriageway. The directions may have been simpler, but such was the quality of the entrants for the a2crg run event that his fine time of 22:20 only placed him 52nd from 76 to finish.
The roundabouts were to play a factor again on Easter Sunday as Kate Thomas took on the Kent Cycling Association 25-mile time-trial between New Romney and Ashford. Despite taking a wrong turn and briefly taking to the grass verge she rocketed around in 1 hour 1 minute and 59 seconds to pick up the prize for second fastest female.
