Evening 10s Rd 10 and racing round-up
Round 10 of Lewes Wanderers’ series of 10-mile time-trials took place on the evening of 27th June with 15 racers, including four guest riders taking to the start. Clear winner was Joe Benians who sped up and down the A22 and passed the timekeepers at the finish line after 21 minutes and 9 seconds of effort.
Kate Thomas took second place and fastest female with a strong 23:47 and Graham Knowles took a fine third place with 25:27. Winner of the road-bike category was 5th placed Jamie Goldstein (26:25) who was just 4 seconds outside his personal best. Charlie Middleton (26:59) was runner-up and 7th overall ahead of Steve Barry (27:32) who just edged out Peter Baker (27:35). Dave Beale took 9th with 28:38 just 6 seconds ahead of 10th placed Paul Hanratty. Simon Yates was 14th in 33:20 with Adrian Hills a mere 9 seconds behind.
Peter Baker and Gina Boakes were down at Preston Park in Brighton two nights later for the 12th Round of the Sussex Cycle Racing Track League. Gina had a great ride in the opening 6-lap “Scratch Race” where she finished 9th and Peter 12th from 16.
Peter had the upper-hand in the following 8-lap Block Handicap as he took 7th and Gina was 15th, but Gina did superbly to claim 6th in the Elimination Race, one place ahead of Peter. She continued that fine form in the Distance Race where she was an excellent 4th from 13 with Peter 8th, but she sat out the final race of the night where Peter placed 12th.
Peter was back in action again the following evening as a quartet of Wanderers competed in an Eastbourne Rovers CC 10-mile time trial. Jamie Goldstein fared best as he placed 11th with 26:42. Peter was 15th in 27:30; Paul Hanratty 18th with 28:31 and Adrian Hills 19th in 32:24.
