Evening 10s Rd 9 and racing round-up
On the evening of Thursday 23rd June Eastbourne Rovers hosted a time-trial over a tough 7.2-mile loop from East Dean past Birling Gap and Beachy Head and back. Of the trio of Lewes Wanderers Jamie Goldstein fared best in 7th with a time of 21:16. Peter Baker was 10th in 22:12 and Adrian Hills 17th in 29:58.
On the evening of Friday 25th June Tom Moss and Joe Benians (both racing for Southborough & District Wheelers) took part in Round 2 of the Hove Park Crits where Tom came 6th and Joe 9th.
On Saturday 25th June Sally Turner (trainSharp) was fastest female and 40th from 86 overall in the ECCA Championships 10-mile TT southeast of Cambridge with her time of 21 minutes and 44 seconds.
Monday 27th June saw Round 9 of Lewes Wanderers’ Evening 10s with 13 racers taking to the start near East Hoathly on the A22. Kate Thomas repeated her triumph from the week before and improved her winning time by 16 seconds to 23 minutes and 43 seconds.
Neil Edwards took a fine second place and first in the road bike category with 25:19 just a dozen seconds ahead of second fastest female Kate Parrish. Graham Faultless (25:52) took runner-up spot in the road bike class with Jamie Goldstein (26:42) on the third step of that metaphorical podium.
Darren Haynes was 7th in 27:03 with 8th placed Steve Barry (27:56) improving his previous personal best by 16 seconds. Also to race were Paul Hanratty (9th in 28:15); Peter Baker (10th, 28:30); Dave Beale (29:10); Adrian Hills (32:37) and Simon Yates (33:00).
Gina Boakes tried her hand, and legs, in the Goodwood Summer Series around the historic motor racing track on Tuesday 28th June. Sadly her race was curtailed by a crash amongst the men in front of her, but she performed admirably at her first attempt and will no doubt be back to try again.
Eastbourne Rovers CC hosted their annual 25-mile championship along the A22 on the same evening. Jamie Goldstein made his debut at the distance and performed well in recording a time of 1 hour 8 minutes and 45 seconds to finish 9th from 13.
On Saturday 2nd July Joe Benians was one of eighteen taking part in a Crawley Wheelers CC 10-mile TT on the A283 near Steyning. His fine time of 20 minutes and 45 seconds gave him third overall, eighteen seconds behind the victor.
