ESCA 2up

Nick Dwyer and Brett Davis by Emma Gearing

With the Siberian conditions hopefully behind us all five pairs of Lewes Wanderers were keen to get back racing on Sunday 25th March in the East Sussex Cycling Association 2up time-trial.

The 27 teams that took to the start line at the top of Shortgate Lane were indeed treated to dry roads, relatively mild temperatures, bright but cloudy skies and a gentle breeze to push them down The Broyle to Kennel Corner mini-roundabout. From here however they would turn left into the wind for the second leg back to the A22 at Golden Cross. For the third the third leg of this peculiar quadruped course they would have a cross wind up the A22 to the Little Horsted roundabout, before once again enjoying what tailwind there was on offer down the A26 all the way to Earwig Corner on the brink of Lewes. The finish was due to be back on The Broyle, but temporary roadworks in Ringmer necessitated a slight truncation from 23.9 miles down to just under 20.4 miles with the finishers whizzing past the timekeepers just to the west of the village instead.

First off for the most local club were Peter Fox and Gina Wolf who stopped those watches after exactly 56 minutes of eyeballs out effort to finish 22nd of the 24 pairs to complete the course. One place behind them in the standings were husband and wife team Jon and Sue Collett who took 1 hour, 1minute and 23 seconds. Martin Baddeley and Rob Pelham were the third of the Lewes entrants to start and to finish, completing the course in 49 minutes and 44 seconds for 11th place. Barely a-minute-and-a-half quicker (48:12), but six places further up the leaderboard were Aidan McConville and Dan Street in 5th, but performance of the day came from new pairing Brett Davis and Nick Dwyer who powered round in 45 minutes and 47 seconds to claim runners up spot.
